90 Minutes of Spin Class: Are You Insane?

20140724-131423-47663560.jpg

Yesterday was another 90 minutes of spin and I loved it!  Well, I kind of hated it because spin will do that to you, but I overall, I loved it.  I look slavishly each week for any 75 or 90 minute class offered.  My max was a series of 2 hour classes this past Winter.  I'm twisted like that.

If you've never done spin at all, let alone 2 hours of it, my biggest piece of advice is DON'T BE INTIMIDATED.  I tried spin 10 years ago and hated it (just regular hate on that one) and vowed never to do it again.  Then, last December, a random discussion with a woman in the gym locker room (thank you tall, athletic girl whoever you are!) encouraged me to try it out again.  My fitness journey had begun, so why not try spin one mo' gin?  The rest is history.  I'm now a full-fledged spin rat ( I think I just made that up - copyright/trademark me!).

What do you need to know before you troop into that dark smelly room in your gym?  No, the one with the bikes.

Throwback Thursday - Tea in Kensington

In May, I went back to London for the second time in my life and fell in love again with the city. My friend Lisa and I had tea at The Orangery in Kensington Gardens. Lovely afternoon, atmosphere and company!

Healthy Mac & Cheese

[gallery]

One pot gives you creamy mac and cheese with NO butter, NO cream, NO velveeta..

serving size - about 4

aprox 150 calories per serving

See? You don’t have to stop eating your favorite foods. You just need to find healthier, less fattening versions. :)

Back from VayCay and Making Plans

I finally have a few months with limited travel - time to focus!

I survived 3 weeks at World Cup without gaining any weight - all that walking and heat actually shaved off another couple of pounds despite all the food and alcohol!

Given my good fortune - I’m taking it as a sign to keep the train going and jumpstart my plans to reach my initial goal weight by October 1st.  Roughly 2lbs a week for the next 14 weeks - that’s actually pretty reasonable.

Now it’s a matter of strength, focus and willpower.

I think I can do it - therefore I will.  That’s actually going to be close to two months away from the 1 year mark of when I started this journey, so I really want to meet my goals by week 52.

My travel schedule picks up pretty significantly again this Fall and I want to be ready for the fun to come without worrying about how I look.  I’ve lost over 30 lbs already, but there is still much work to do!

Slacker Update

Since I got back from Europe I’ve been so slack - I admit it.  I had a few days of food slacking, but I’m back on track with my food and my exercise now, so things are looking up!

I have set some new goals for myself - I want to get a couple of fitness certifications this year both for the general feeling of badassery, as well as to help me stay on track with my fitness goals.  Training for a cert with a defined timeline will keep me focused - having a clear goal usually works best for me.

I”m excited, but also intimidated.  I do worry that my body won’t be able to do what I want it to, but I’m excited at the possibility of pushing to see if I can do it.

I’m going to get back into my blogging for the next few weeks until my next trip - I want to stay focused the next couple of weeks to jumpstart my progress which has stagnated since I got back from my trip.

Happy Memorial Day!

Thursday, May 15, 2014

I’m back!!! Two weeks in Europe and today was my first day back at the gym.

Spin class was great and the saying is true - you never regret a workout!

Working on setting new goals for the rest of the year and maybe even the rest of my life.

One thing I am happy about - one of many- having lost the 30 lbs and being more physically fit made me so much more confident on my trip that I could walk anyway and do anything and even take pictures unfettered by insecurity. I’m not where I want to be ultimately, but where I am right now is just fine too!

I’m on my journey with so much more to come!!!

Yin Yoga Weekend!

Amazing two days learning so much about the human body and learning to find your new edges while still working within the limits your bones and physical make-up allow. Keeping the body fluid requires keeping your joints and ligaments mobile and flexible. That’s what Yin Yoga provides.

Your hips may not be tight- your bones and joints may legitimately be limiting your range of motion. However, you can still work to keep the natural mobility you have, even if it isn’t as wide or as open as you might like.

Your body is your body. It doesn’t need to look any other way than what it truly is to the best it can be. Yin yoga is about your body taking the shape as suits it, not bending your body into a pose to look like something or someone else.

Love your body, know it’s limitations and keep striving to make it the best it can be!

Bonus- a beautiful weekend at the beach!

On November 24, 2013, this number was 229.1.

5 months later and this was the number on my scale this morning. I’ve now lost 33.5 pounds. It’s taken a lot of work and discipline, but in some ways, it has been a very natural change. I still have more weight to lose, but I’m so much closer than I was!

Stay focused, even if you get off track. The results will come.

Congrats to Rita!!!!

Getting ready for my Yin yoga workshop this weekend.  My goal is to keep my food intake pretty light and healthy.  Lots of water, firing up the NutriBullet for smoothies and exercise.

I’ve stagnated in my weight loss the last few weeks, so my goal this week is to get things kickstarted again!

Saturday Yang and Easter Sunday Yin - Flywheel 75!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  Saturday was yang-y: kettlebells, spin, late Easter dress shopping (yes, I still buy an Easter dress every year!)   Threw in a little bit of Yin yoga just to wrap up the day, but at that point I was so worn out I could have fallen asleep!

Today was sunrise service and then relaxed the rest of the day!  It’s all about balance right?

Flywheel is doing a 75 minute class this week and that sucker was already completely full within an hour!  I’m waitlisted so here’s hoping I’ll still get in.

I feel so blessed right now.  Sure, there is still so much more I want to do and see, but I’m also grateful for where I am right now this moment.

Don’t ever get so focused on your goals that you forget to be happy about what you already have now!

Blessings to all!

Heat, Juice and Balance

Hot Yoga = Amazing

I’ve been juicing today so I had to sit down a bit more than usual but class still felt wonderful.

The juicing last week didn’t go too well, but I’m doing it again the next few days.  However, this time it’s more “primarily juicing.  I still eat solid food - light food as much as possible - but right now going cold turkey just makes me more stressed about food, and then I make some INSANELY bad food choices out of hunger.

Everything is about balance and doing what works for you while still being healthy.

This is my race (or yours) - no one else has to dictate what is right or wrong as long as you are doing what you know to be right for your body and to allow you to meet your long-term goals.

Sidenote: The shower after hot yoga class is the best ever!

Some Like It Hot....

3rd Hot Yoga class today (I’m counting the Warm Yin yoga class I took on Tuesday) and it’s official - I love it.

Don’t get me wrong - it is killer and there are seconds I wonder what the hell I’m doing there, but I love it.  The heat, warm loose muscles, sweat and best stretching ever just does it for me.

Not to mention the shower you take afterwards - best feeling ever!

Now the black girl hair issue - well, I’m going to get my hair done tomorrow.  The sweat is no joke.  No chance of saving it.  I see some girls in there with their hair hanging down and I wonder how they can survive it.  I pull mine up and use a sweat wrap band - but that’s more out of habit than anything.

Hair aside - the feeling and flexibility of hot yoga is worth the hair repair afterward.  I strongly recommend it if you’re hesitant or nervous about taking a class.  Don’t be intimidated!

P.S.: Juicing is not my thing - I’ll do a more formal update but let’s just say I haven’t been able to stick to strictly juice - and upon further reflection, I think I’m okay with that.

JUICE!

Alright - I’m ready to DTOX!  Planning to do a 3-day juice cleanse this week to get my body reset.  This past weekend was fun, but I’m sure all the alcohol, coffee and brunch food took their toll.

3 days of juices - let’s see how this goes…. I’ll post my experiences here so you all can share my pain.

Aqua Cycle Review

image

Finally was able to try the Aqua Cycle class in NYC this weekend.  My initial impression is sadly just lukewarm right now.  We arrived just as class began so I didn’t have a chance to get settled and adjusted beforehand.  Then the pedal came off my bike an the new bike they put me on was wobbly like a table with one leg too short.  And there was a lot of additional upper body arm work that wasn’t terribly useful in my personal opinion.

All THAT aside, I think I still liked it enough to go back and try it again the next time I’m in town.  Being in the water definitely added a new dimension to the usual spin class, and I think once you are able to get the hang of the changes you have to make in your positioning to be able to pedal smoothly underwater, the more enjoyable it will become.

The basics:

image

Cool studio - very small with a reception area upstairs.  Steps lead downstairs to a locker/changing area where you can store your things and 4 or 5 shower stalls so you can shower away the chlorine after class (shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are provided - but it is all peppermint - holy mint batman!)

As far as equipment/gear, all you need is a bathing suit.  Many are in the racing type suits you see athletes wear, but basically any swimsuit will do - no one cares.  The glasses are same-sex, men and women have different classes, so no worries about being ogled.  The studio provides towels and special swim shoes.  You can also buy water there if you forget to bring your own (which I did).

image

Then you jump into the pool, grab a bike (depending on the class it can get a little crowded) adjust the seat and follow the instructor who teaches both from her own bike in the pool and standing out of the pool.  The only thing that is really unusual is at certain points during the class, you go into what they call “4th Position” where you keep you feet in the pedal straps and hang off the back of your bike holding onto the seat.  I’m not sure I buy into what benefit that has, but it is at the very least an exercise in balance and arm strength.

At that point, it becomes a lot like a regular spin class except for the water (ha!).  It can be difficult to spin smoothly at first - you have to really squat to be able to keep your legs pedaling, but all the better for your legs right?

Final Review:  Intriguing enough to try again.

(Note: photos are not mine - I just didn’t have a chance to take my own but wanted to give everyone at least some idea of how it looks)

Warm Yin

So I just found a Warm Yin Yoga class.  It’s at 6AM and across town, but the concept of doing Yin in a hot yoga room is too much to pass up!

Rachel Frederickson, The Biggest Loser, and Losing Weight Fast

I’m glad to hear she gained back 20 lbs.  Her final show weight was just disturbing to me personally.   If anything, this shows that weight loss is a journey, not a destination.  Losing physical weight is just part of the process.  The mental road is much tougher. Good luck to Rachel!

Hot Yoga Update

Today was my first hot yoga class.

How was it you ask?

In a word:  AWESOME

As I sat in the sauna at my regular gym earlier today, I thought, if I love sitting in here, I’m sure I can handle a yoga class right?

I hadn’t entirely convinced myself, even as I sat on my mat in the already warm studio a few hours later.  But when class started, I went with it and loved it!

The key - it wasn’t a “flow” class.  No jumping from one position to another.  I know for many, the more active ashtanga/vinyasa styles work best, but I like finding my poses and holding them.  Sinking into my body and my thoughts (and a little pain occasionally as my body stretches).  That’s why Yin is so wonderful for me, and today, I added Hot Yoga to my list.

After just a few minutes in a regular flow-type class, I would be screaming in my head to escape.  Today, everything just came together.  It was tough, don’t get me wrong.  And I was literally dripping sweat - to the point that my fingers started to prune & pickle like I’d been in the bathtub too long.  And there were a few moments where I felt a little bit dizzy, not much, but enough to make me sit down and drink some water.

But I loved the feel of the heat, pushing my body to find the pose and correct alignment.  Breathing and concentrating.

Another thing, similar to spin class- everyone is too focused on themselves to notice or care if you are doing something right, wrong or not at all.  If you need to sit down, or hell, lay down, do it.  No need to feel intimidated.

Technically, there isn’t much added benefit to hot yoga vs. a regular yoga class - you don’t really burn more calories or detox that much through the extra sweat.  But it made me feel great and very refreshed.  Something I never have gotten from other yoga practices outside of Yin.

So here’s a new addition to my fitness regimen.  I said I hated spin - now I love it.  I said I’d never do hot yoga - now I know how wonderful it can be.

Always be open to new things - you may find something you’ve been missing that you didn’t even know you wanted!

Hot Yoga?

So I’m going to take the plunge.

Next week. Hot Yoga & I will meet to see if we like each other. As much as I’m obsessed with Yin right now, I want to try to stay open to other practices.

I’m a black girl, so me and excessive heat have little to do with outside of a flatiron, but let’s see how it goes.

Lovely Saturday starting with Kettlebell training, spin class and topped off with Yin yoga. I love when I get to enjoy my three favorites in the same day. When you are doing things you enjoy, it doesn’t feel like “exercise” or a chore. I actually look forward to it!

Full Moon Yoga and Meditation

Experienced a great full moon yoga class (even though I still struggle with fast yoga flow sequences I survived it!) followed by a wonderful 30 minute meditation.

I’ve always felt a strong affinity for the moon and the idea of a yoga sequence devoted to grounding myself and showing respect for the Moon’s impact on our bodies and minds drew me in. The meditation that followed focused on blessing and grounding the Earth to share peace and love during the somewhat turbulent time of the full moon. Our meditation leader called it a great benefit we give to the Earth and all who live on it. I loved that idea of giving back to the Earth and sharing my energy with others. If you have a chance to so something like this one month, I would recommend it.

I know I’m sounding a bit “new age-y” lately -I’ve felt a strong impact from my recent yoga experiences. I believe it will be a wonderful balance to my more traditional training, and a major boost to my spiritual and mental growth as I go forward on my journey.

Amazing day of fitness yesterday! 2 hours of spin, a yin yoga workshop and a full moon yoga and meditation session.

Yin and yang. It’s all about balance.

As you may have noticed, Yin yoga is now added into my fitness training. Simple postures held for 3-5 minutes at time to focus on opening the joints, ligaments and connective tissue-as well as unblock the flow of energy through the body. I’m in love with it! And it is the perfect compliment to my more “yang” activities of cycle and strength training. Not to mention the intense meditation that Yin provides.

I’ve tried other forms of yoga, the more intensive yang-styles like vinyasa, but to be honest, I literally hate it. Maybe I just need more practice, but it is excruciating for me to do one of the more power flow intensive classes. I’ll get on the bike and spin like crazy for 2 hours, but I can barely survive 45 minutes of Vinyasa. One thing I’m learning is to listen to my body and doe those activities that I actually enjoy and will push myself for further accomplishment.

Until finding Yin, I was dreading putting yoga into my regular training plan, but now, I’m excited! Increased flexibility, mobility (my hips are atrociously tight after years behinds desks) and the mental spiritual benefits of Yin have me so enthused I can’t wait until my next yoga class.

I will also take some more basic yoga classes that are slower and more focused on learning technique and form. I don’t want to give up on learning to like the more muscle-intensive yang yoga styles, but I’ll ease into that. Now I have the luxury of learning while still getting some much needed benefits from my Yin practice. Yin is part of my life now I think!

Yin Yoga 101

Yin Yoga- my new favorite yoga practice!

urbanyogadubai:

It’s the exercise paradox. The more you work out, the greater your chances of injury: a throb in your knee as you jog, a sharp twinge in your back when you twist for a serve. Your muscles are toned and strong, yet there you are, benched by your own aching joints.

But a rising form of yoga aims…

Loss and Recovery

Good morning all.  I’ve been MIA for a while due to an unexpected family emergency.  Sadly, my mother passed away last week, and I’m finally getting home and trying to adjust to this feeling of something being missing.  It almost feels like I’m forgetting to do something, or I’ve overlooked something I need, but then I take a moment and realize it’s my Mom that’s missing.  We lived in different cities, so I didn’t see her terribly often, but we talked basically every day.  She was an amazing woman and I miss her very much, but I take great comfort she is not in any pain and in a much better place.

That said, I’m blogging about it here because losing my mother is now part of my journey.  How I choose to deal with it emotionally and physically is up to me.  My Mom wasn’t in good health, much of it driven by not taking as good care of herself as she got older.  The usual culprits, weight gain, diabetes, poor diet…. One thing I can learn from this is just how important it is to be healthy and take care of my body.  Our health is precious, and it isn’t until it is taken away that we realize it sometimes.

Now with so many lessons learned from my mother throughout my life, one more thing I will add to it is the need to be healthy.  I have been on that path already (on and off of course) for several years now, but this in some ways just reinforces that now is the time to make this a permanent and unwavering part of my life.

It would be so easy to wallow in sadness and food right now - especially after being back in my hometown for almost a week and not being able to adhere to my usual guidelines.  However, when I got back home yesterday, the first thing I did was go to yoga and pick up a salad from the gym cafe. And this morning, I started planning my workouts for the rest of the week.  Feeling good about myself now seems to start with treating my body the right way.  I think I would actually start to feel more sad and depressed if I was sitting in my bed eating doughnuts and take-out right now.

I feel better knowing I’m doing something good for my mental and physical well-being, especially during this time of stress and loss.

God gives us what we can bear, helps us and wants good things for us.  While I am selfishly sad for myself, I am happy for my mother being at peace and free of pain and struggle.  I will love her always.

How I manage this is part of my journey, and a test of my ability to cope.

I am choosing to be positive, strong and keep pushing forward.  I think that is what my Mom would want for me and expect of me.

Whatever your own personal losses or setbacks may be, take time to process, grieve, cry and shout if need be, but don’t let it derail your plans to be the best you can be.

Blessings to you all and enjoy the day!

I’m officially back in my 100s!!! (Just barely!)

It’s been well over a year since I was under 200 lbs, and given that I was at my all-time highest weight of 229 lbs just over 3 months ago, I’m taking it as a big accomplishment.

Almost 30 pounds down and still much more to go, but a day to celebrate and prepare to move forward to reach my goals!

Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!

Rosalind Russell (Auntie Mame)

In the midst of a traveling spell so I’ve been slack in posting. Last weekend I visited friends and you know what? I ate basically whatever I wanted to (within reason/portion). I did go to spin class one of the 3 days I was there, but beyond that, I made a decision not to worry about it. While I still kept my mind on how much and what I was consuming, I also didn’t tamp down my enjoyment of my time with friends fretting over food.

Once you make a plan and commit to it, you have the tools to veer off that plan from time to time and still know how to get right back to your regular routine. When I hit town again, it was Water, Workout and Reset. No backsliding into old habits.

Did I lose a couple of days of calorie deficit? Sure.

Did I enjoy myself and not enslave myself to my rigid routine? Hell yes!

Working on fitness goals, any personal goal, is a selfish endeavor. I mean that in a good way. I love myself enough to work toward being the best me I can be in mind, body and spirit. I will find happiness only by being happy with myself, not based on how I look, but on how I feel about my journey and knowing I’m trying my best to accomplish my goals.

Long story short: You can live life, enjoy life and still focus on your goals!

Spin Class tonight! 635 calories and an amazing burst of energy afterwards!

Spinning and Lifting

Spin class in the morning and KB training in the afternoon. I love feeling strong! And I, so revved up after spin class I feel like I could go again! Of course I want to take a nap not long after that, but the rush is there initially.

Cardio and Strength are the best combination!

2 hour endurance spin today. It was tough but I loved it! Well, I loved it afterwards. I hated it sometimes during.

Hope everyone had a chance to get out and move today!

25 Lbs Down and Snow!

As of the morning I’ve lost 24.9 lbs since Nov. 24th! I’m still hoping to be under the 200 lb. mark by the end of February, but I’m happy with my results so far and plan to keep on going until I reach my goal.

Snow Day number two today and so far I haven’t been eating hibernation levels of food. No training since the roads are bad, but good to have a break. Back at it tomorrow weather permitting!

Stay focused- you’ll thank yourself later!

shed-a-pound-not-a-tear:

thehealthjourney:

I’m so angry right now.

So most of us know of the show “The Biggest Loser.” I didn’t watch this season (though I have admittedly watched and enjoyed the show in the past). Apparently, tonight was this season’s finale. The winner, Rachel, lost 155 pounds, with a final weight of 105 pounds - which puts her at a BMI of 17.5, meaning “underweight.”

That’s not what I’m angry about, though. What I’m angry about is people’s reactions. Since the big finale, the internet has exploded with calling this woman “ugly” “disgusting” “anorexic” etc etc. Seriously, this is a society that has tons of different weight loss shows because we just LOVE to tell people that they’re too fat and need to lose weight. And we love to watch them do it (while we sit on our asses in front of the television). I don’t know Rachel’s story, but I’m willing to bet that like most BL contestants, she probably struggled with weight her whole life. She probably has always been made fun of for it. Family and friends probably told her that she needed to go on one of those weight loss shows and stop being such a fattie. And she listened.

And then what does she get? What does she get after working her ass off for months? She wins the contest, steps out on stage for her big reveal, and gets immediately mocked. She can’t win. No one can win in this society. You’re a “fattie,” people tell you you’re disgusting and need to lose weight, and then you finally do it, and immediately get told you “took it too far” and “look disgusting” and “too skinny.”

Does she probably need to put on a few pounds and maintain a healthy weight? Sure. Could she possibly have actually developed anorexia on the show? Absolutely, but that’s her business (though if she does have a problem, I sincerely hope she gets help).

But I’m just so sickened by the fact that we literally tell people to lose weight, on television, for our entertainment, and then when they lose a bit more than we wanted them to, we turn around and call them ugly and gross and anorexic.

We have no right to judge this woman. Even Bob and Jillian won’t comment on her weight loss (though they looked pretty shocked, and not in a good way, when she stepped out onto that stage). None of us know her, what she went through on the show, or what she’s dealing with now. She may or may not have an eating disorder - who knows? It doesn’t give anyone the right to call her names and tell her she did a bad thing, especially when these are all the same people who told her to lose weight in the first place.

You think she lost too much weight? Maybe she wouldn’t have taken it so far if she wasn’t being pressured by an entire country to lose as much weight as possible, for our personal enjoyment. People never fail to amaze me.

You honestly made me reflect on what I thought of her and made me change my mind. I guess I was more concerned about her health. If she’s healthy and loving herself, then there’s nothing wrong. You’re right.

No one forced Rachel to go on the show or lose weight. She chose it because she felt it would give her the focus and motivation to accomplish her goals.

Rachel was a high caliber competitive swimmer not that many years ago- she knows what healthy is. The amount of calories and training you need to be a swimmer is massive. During the regular season she rocked it. Working hard and training her behind off. Maybe her competitiveness got out of control, but I think it is universally agreed she looked amazing before the finale at 150 lbs. I believe she even said then she was 10 lbs at that point from her athlete body. That would put her at 140. She went to 105 and looked dangerously unhealthy.

There are a lot of issues and pressures in society, but in this particular case, I think this was more of a personal battle within Rachel than her feeling the pressure to lose weight from external sources.

The larger issue is she is being heralded by the show and many others for losing weight regardless of whether she is healthy. That is the wrong message to send and we don’t need to continue to applaud drastic weight loss for the sake of being thin at any cost. If she’d gained a ton of weight people would have no problem telling her she’s unhealthy, but for some reason because she lost weight people don’t want to tell that same truth.

Congrats to Tumi Oguntala on the Biggest Loser 15!  She lost an amazing amount of weight the healthy way and looks fabulous!  Definitely an inspiration as I work toward my own weight loss goals.

Tumi Oguntala, 40, a brand strategist from Clifton Park who won the $100,000 Season 15 at-home “The Biggest Loser” prize Tuesday night during the live finale show.  Oguntala’s final weight was 144, down 175 pounds from her starting weight of 319 pounds. She fought hard all season, pulling big weight-loss numbers each week, which led to her elimination Week 11. She lost more than 54 percent of her body weight.

Just wanted to highlight a great success, especially after the controversy over the overall winner Rachel looking downright unhealthy.

Great for Tumi - she did!  I am personally inspired!  My ultimate goal weight is 145 and I started over 100 lbs less than she did.

I can do this - we all can!

23 Pounds Down!

Just over two months since I’ve re-committed to my health and fitness journey and I have 23 lbs NOT to show for it.

I have a long road ahead to reach my goals, but I’m getting there.

I won’t reach my original 90-day goal, but I hope to be close - at the very least under 200 lbs again (30 lbs lost) - that is my informal revised goal.

Then a new 90-days begins and I will continue to push forward.  I was just shy of 230 pounds at Thanksgiving and now I’m close to being back in the 100s!

The best thing is that I haven’t been hungry (not legitimately hungry as opposed to bored hungry or habit hungry) at all.  Bonus, I’ve discovered that I LOVE spin class and am going back to kettlebells!  I love working out when I’m doing things I enjoy.  I love food, it’s just finding the right things to eat that I also love.

High motivation mode!

Confessions of a Calorie Whore

I’m a calorie whore - I take no shame in it!

If there is a way to shave 50 calories off of something, I’m here for it and I’ll do anything necessary to make it happen.

I spent some time this morning weighing bananas because it only takes one banana that is just a bit larger than usual to give you another 50 calories unknowingly.  I want to choose those extra 50 calories if I can.

I don’t keep a food journal.  I’ve done it in the past and it’s worked, but it triggers some OCD tendencies in me, so I think it’s best if I just track it a bit more organically.  I can tell you how many calories I’ve consumed during the day, and since I’m trying to stay in the 1500 range every day, it’s pretty consistent.  I may pull out my iPhone calculator and add them up throughout the day as I make decisions on what to eat and when, but beyond that, I try to let each day come and go without being too anal about writing it down.

But I am in a constant state of barter and trade with myself over what I’m consuming and if it’s calorie-worthy.  I try to stick with the 80/20 rule for eating healthy, and I refuse to deny myself anything as long as it fits within my calorie goal.  I love Krispy Kreme donuts, but I haven’t had one in months because I haven’t felt it was worth giving up something else during the day to have one (see my earlier peanut butter post).  However, if the time comes that I do, it will be fine, and maybe its just salad for dinner that night and keep moving.

So yes, I am a calorie whore, but I also have to live.  That may mean I go out to dinner with friends and order what the hell I want and have 3 drinks to boot, but that is one meal on one night every once in a while.  Then I get up and go to the gym and eat as clean as a can to make up for it.

As long as you plan and recover, weight loss does not have to be some kind of life prison term.

Food is your friend, not your warden.

Now - Back to weighing fruit!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Bites

I love PB but one serving of it is roughly 200 calories before you even add anything to go with it - add a banana or apple and you’re at 300 calories off the bat. Now your “snack” is turning into a meal, and that is a calorie sucker for me so I avoid it.

The answer is PB2! Dehydrated PB where the same serving of dry powder with water comes in at…..wait for it….45 calories. Yes - now you can actually have some fun with your PB outside of just celery (blech-y’all I really don’t like celery).

Today I used Chocolate PB2 (yes Chocolate!) and a banana to make little banana bites. Yumlicious and depending on the size of a banana you use anywhere from 125-195 calories.

Now that’s more like it!

2 Hour Cycling class completed!

Now let’s see if I can make it back next week. ;)

Menstrual Cycle and Weight

While there may be minor changes in metabolism, food intake and cravings throughout the menstrual cycle in addition to possible water retention, these will not impact weight-loss success.

2 Workouts and a Smoothie

Busted it in KB training, but still not back to former endurance. I’ll get there though!

Then went to Spin and busted that out too- 1100 calories combined! Saturday is definitely one of my new “hard” days.

Came home, had lunch and made my infamous ( if only to me) 150 calorie smoothie and now it’s time to relax!

Woman goes to the gym for 100 days (Weight Loss Motivation)

This is so inspiring!  To see the change in her not only physically but more importantly her spirit was lifted!  18 lbs in a 100 days may not seem like a lot to some, but she kept going and eventually lost 51 and is still at it!

So amazing to see - may it be a reminder to all of us to keep going and take care of ourselves!

Kettlebell and Spin

Kettlebell training followed by spin this morning.

I’m in it to win it!

2 Hour Spin Class?

Alright - another goal for myself. There is a 2-hour spin class this weekend that I want to see if I can tackle. It sounds daunting, but what an accomplishment at the end!

Pushing myself is part of the program though right?

Stay tuned and I’ll update at the end of the weekend.

Another spin class complete! Pushed hard today and really working on getting my wattage up. But the important thing was the 560 calories I burned in roughly 45 minutes.

Also fixed my new Bluetooth HR strap - if you have a Polar H7 that pairs to your apps and then stops suddenly, take out the battery, short-out the batter connections with a pin or paper clip and after you put it back in, the strap should pair to the app again.
