2 Hour Spin Class?

Alright - another goal for myself. There is a 2-hour spin class this weekend that I want to see if I can tackle. It sounds daunting, but what an accomplishment at the end!

Pushing myself is part of the program though right?

Stay tuned and I’ll update at the end of the weekend.

Another spin class complete! Pushed hard today and really working on getting my wattage up. But the important thing was the 560 calories I burned in roughly 45 minutes.

Also fixed my new Bluetooth HR strap - if you have a Polar H7 that pairs to your apps and then stops suddenly, take out the battery, short-out the batter connections with a pin or paper clip and after you put it back in, the strap should pair to the app again.

Reblog if you are a fitblr who's still on their journey of losing weight and getting fit.

700 Calories from 1 hour of Spin

The SnowJam is over and I popped into noon spin class to burn off some of the food I’ve been eating the past couple of snowbound days.

Still a bit sore from the kettlebells, but it felt good!

DOMS Water Retention Update: My weight fluctuated 4 lbs since Monday. As my body healed from the previous 7 straight days of training, my weight went back down to what it should be as of my last weigh-in. My common sense told me I couldn’t gain 4 lbs in one day unless it was water weight, but it’s good to know for sure that’s what caused it. Word to the wise if anyone comes across this- particularly after a tough training period. Continue to eat normally, HYDRATE and let your body repair itself.

Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

DOMS and Water Retention

Kettlebells has resulted in some serious Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) as my newly stressed muscles repair themselves causing inflammation and retention of fluid. With that water retention comes perceived weight gain, but I’ll keep hydrating and doing light stretching to get through it. All should be back on track later this week.

Snow day today, so no gym tonight, but hopefully tomorrow I can get back to it. Yesterday was my official rest day, but since I can still barely walk after KB training, another day of rest won’t hurt at this point.

Kettlebells!

All day workshop today - it was tough but good! No joke -I literally passed out at 8pm exhausted. Literally have not been that worn out in a while. Glad to back and looking forward to adding it back into my training routine.

Since I’m splitting between my full gym and the KB gym scheduling will be tricky, but just means that some days I’ll have a morning and afternoon workout instead of doing it all at once, but that should be fine.

Just feels good to have a plan in place -not just physically, but mentally the confidence I have knowing I’m doing something about it. When I look in the mirror and don’t like what I see about my body, I can pick myself knowing that I’m actively working to improve it. Before when that happened, I would just get even more bummed when all I could do is catalog the doughnuts or cake I’d eaten.

Confidence is king!

20 Pounds Down!

20.5 lbs to be exact - nine weeks of hard work have paid off! Motivation to keep going - I have a ways to go, but I know I can do it!

You can do it too- don’t get discouraged!

Does this look like a “diet” to you? A 270 calorie steak (Trader Joe Angus Sirloin) and a big salad.

This looks better than anything from a fast food restaurant for sure!

Change can be good!

let—love—fly:

i really want to try a spin class but i am not a member of any gym and i dont really want to pay for a membership when i can just use the gym at the police department for free. ugh.

Depending on your city, there are spin-only gyms that let you pay by the class for $15-25 or so. Might be worth checking out if you just want to try one. Or see if any friends have a free day pass to their gym so you could try one. It’s an amazing workout.

Really wasn’t feeling the gym and spin class tonight, then Beyoncé’s video comes on TV and all of a sudden I’m like YEP GOT TO GO. That woman is unreal. Best gym motivation.

Next Up: Back to Kettlebells!

Almost two years ago I started doing Kettlebells and loved it, but now I’m excited to try adding it back in. It’s always a rush to feel the strength of swinging.

Sick Empress

Totally unexpected cold hit me hard this past week. I thought it would be just a one, maybe two day thing and I’d be back at it, but in was knocked for a loop and was out for the week. Insane.

Prepping now to get back at it on Monday - setting my schedule and looking to get back to an activity I loved - more about that in the next post.

But for now, the Fit Empress is in recovery and ready to get back at it hard! My food wasn’t bad while I was sick -and usually that’s when I would give myself a free pass to eat crap, but not this week so I consider that a good thing!

No weight loss this week, but no gain so I’m calling it even and moving ahead!

Sick Day

Busy weekend and crazy weather have left me a bit sickly. I will lay low, recover and get back at it tomorrow.

Energy Density means calories divided by grams/weight. The low energy density foods are also high nutrient dense foods.

This really hits home for me since my current daily calorie intake is almost exactly the same - calorie control is not about restricting food intake - just making better choices. And if you do happen to eat from the food in the picture on the left, you can work it into your calorie count for the day by making better choices the rest of the day. Don’t let one meal discourage you!

Yummy banana strawberry smoothie in my little Magic Bullet. No more blenders full of smoothies- make one serving and go.

1 banana, 3 strawberries, a little almond milk, honey and ice - voila! Under 200 calories!

I didn’t add protein to this one because I maxed on my eggs after my workout today, but usually would throw that in too. Honey is optional of course, but felt like it today!

Back At It!

Back in the gym today after a few days off due to weather and some genuine slacker-ness.  I’ve been eating within my calorie range, so I don’t feel completely horrible about skipping a few days at the gym, but I feel SO MUCH BETTER having gone back today.

45 minutes of spin and 30 minutes of strength training = 850 calories burned  - feeling good!

Hope everyone is surviving the cold weather in the States and having a great start to 2014!

Heart Rate Zones: Fat Burning vs. Cardio

image

I live by my heart rate monitor these days, and previously I’ve been told by trainers that I didn’t need intensity when I exercised because the optimal heart rate zone for burning fat is about 65% of your maximum heart rate.  However, those same people were also telling me I might need to work out 2-3 times a day to see results.

Errrrm, okay….

In the past, the significant fitness goals I’ve reached occurred when I was doing some level of strenuous/intense exercise, bootcamp, kettlebells, etc. - along with healthy eating of course.  So I’ve had the dilemma of figuring out exactly how I’m supposed to train for weight loss and general fitness.

Since I’ve taken up spinning recently, I’ve been torn about the whole “fat burn vs. cardio” heart rate zone debate.  Spinning is killer cardio - no doubt about it.  I frequently work in my higher heart rate zones for most of the sessions - so did that mean I was hurting my goals?

motiveweight:

What motivates you might not motivate me and vice versa, so find what motivates YOU and keep on doing it. Start small, take baby steps, be consistent, and you are guaranteed to see results over time.

Six Weeks, Fifteen Pounds and 18,848 Calories!

The stats are in and the first 6 weeks of my journey have been wonderful, difficult, intense and satisfying.

In just six weeks I’ve lost almost 16 pounds, worked out 46 times for 41 hours total and burned almost 19,000 calories!  Not a bad start at all!

I haven’t been perfect, but I’ve been consistent and determined.

Another 8 weeks are left in my initial 90-Day transformation.  Looking back at all of this is really great motivation for me to keep pushing forward.

You can keep track of my weigh-ins and workouts on my fitness tracker page.

New Year's Day Accomplishment

I did the 75 minute spin class today - first time attempting the longer format class. 864 calories burned according to my heart rate monitor. It’s hard to process a number that big, but for an hour and fifteen minutes of spin that makes sense. I pushed hard today, upping my resistance, but easing up occasionally if I needed it.

This is the push I could never get from running. The impact on my joints and feet were just too much for me to really ever get used to. But spinning, my heart rate gets to the same levels, but without the joint stress, I can push myself a bit more each time.

After class I was pumped - the spinner’s high is a real phenomenon! My legs were (still are) sore but I felt amazing!

Now it’s just sticking to my calorie goal for the day and drinking lots of water and 2014 is off to a great start!
